The Virginia Beach Convention Center is the cornerstone of the Virginia Beach development was deswigned by SOM that located in Virginia Beach, VA, United States. The Virginia Beach Convention Center (VBCC) demonstrates the ability of SOM to look beyond the immediate site of a project to promote community growth. Since its completion, VBCC has become the centerpiece of a master plan 40 years in Virginia Beach Green and reinvigorate a classic city Oceanside Resort. Design inspiration came from the region, past, present and future. A flight of 147 feet of glass and steel tower pays tribute to the historic lighthouse of the town, while small farms sustain energy saving curtain wall of glass that wraps around the entrance. The lobby has a panoramic video screen that displays both commissioned digital artwork and convention information. Advanced technology is exposed in a system optimization telephone communication that allows conference participants to find one another and easy to navigate without difficulty.

SOM, working with the City of Virginia Beach, developed 505,000 square feet of space with an energy of several successful initiatives, lighting and HVAC systems programmed to conserve electricity during peak hours, energy efficient windows that limit UV penetration, naturally rot-and insect-resistant Cumaru wood flooring and decks, and effective systems for stormwater retention. In 2008, energy costs VBCC decreased by 13%. These initiatives, sustainable design has helped the Center achieve certification, “Virginia Green” program to a statewide to reduce the environmental impacts of the tourism industry. The center includes four sub-reconfigurable rooms, each with ceilings of 40 feet and a span of 240 feet clear roof. VBCC roof is one of the largest column free spans in the U.S. The facility also includes a large ballroom, meeting rooms and a community-oriented park landscaped with plants tolerant draft and Water rainwater collected and reused. Since its opening, the convention center has significantly raised the profile of the community and acted as a catalyst for new developments, inspire the Virginia Beach community with a compelling vision of what their city can be.
