University of Toronto at Scarborough – New Student Centre, Located in Toronto, Canada, was designed by Stantec Architecture Ltd. was instrumental in designing a Student Centre which conveys the spirit of openness and accessibility, both cornerstones of the University of Toronto’s Scarborough campus culture.
The Student Centre is a 50,700 sf flexible multi-purpose space for the students. The Student Centre exemplifies the students’ ability to put their vision and education to work. It creates a strong gateway image for the campus and through a highly collaborative design process promotes issues and ideas of importance to the student body, generating identity and pride on campus.
Students of the UTSC (Canada’s largest and most powerful university) at the smallest of the University’s 3 campuses pledged $20M to fund a student centre, a new cultural heart of the campus.
The design brief was required to include a legacy to students and to be both environmentally sensitive and financially viable, whilst creating a building of architectural significance using new and expressive materials that did not mimic the existing brutality of the existing buildings but “worked” with their materiality. The building was also designed to acheive LEED silver certification, and was also to include a variety of associated exterior spaces.
Major materials are titanium and calcium silicate panels and glass. There are also green roofs and a pub restaurant, a healthy food court and a chapel, newspaper and health services, a radio station, a women’s centre, a fireplace lounge and a campus store.
