Trump International Hotel and Tower in Hawaii, United States

August 13, 2010 Category: Commercial Building, Hotel

Designed by Guerin Glass Architects, Trump International Hotel and Tower  is located in Hawaii, United States. Dream holiday destination and iconic location for honeymooners the world over, Hawaii sticks in mind for its long golden beaches, relaxed attitudes and sunny, cloudless skies. Where better then to design a stunning new luxury hotel than Waikiki, Hawaii? This was certainly the attitude of New York-based firm Guerin Glass Architects, who had previously completed four other projects throughout the exotic island cluster.

What sounded like a relatively simple build soon hit resistance from locals, who found Guerin Glass’ design too contemporary for their traditional tastes. Whilst the backlash may not have reached the extend of London’s Chelsea Barracks architectural war, Guerin Glass were forced to rethink their original design for the 2m sq ft residential and hotel development. They responded by infusing Hawaiian and Polynesian culture into the plans, constructing the building’s fin walls and geometry to harness the strong Hawaiian light, creating a deep facade with shadow patterns reminiscent of those found in traditional Polynesian weaving. The exterior of the structure itself may have been adapted to please local residents, yet Guerin Glass have remained true to their roots and continued to construct a completely modern, technologically advanced and contemporary building unlike any other on Waikiki.

Once this initial hiccup was righted, Trump International Hotel and Tower was termed a categorical success on completion in autumn 2009. With a grand opening scheduled for late summer 2010, the hope is that this traditional/modern hybrid hotel will act as a catalyst for the revitalisation of Honolulu’s hotel district. The 38-storey building aims to provide the complete luxury experience to both permanent and temporary residents, taking advantage of the dramatic panoramic ocean views with a design that both evokes and responds to the exotic location. The 750,000 sq ft tower comprises of 462 residential and hotel units, multiple dining facilities, resort facilities including a day spa and fitness centre, and well as parking for 220 cars. Set in expansive grounds, the complex maintains a prime position on the coast, with the hopes that a new image for this popular area is just around the corner.
