The Light House by Hudson Architects, United Kingdom

August 29, 2009 Category: House, Residential

The Light House was designed by Hudson Architects is located in Belper, Derbyshire, United Kingdom. The 360 sqm house sits above the town of Belper with the main reception area opening up to spectacular views over the Amber Valley. Built into the hillside the building’s materiality becomes progressively light, from solid red stone to timber and then glass – culminating in a 2-storey glass sun-lounge that protrudes 5m without support from the Western elevation.

The project exemplifies Hudson Architects’ interest in minimizing energy consumption in residential architecture through the use of low-tech measures, such as solar gain and recycled heat. Built into the hill the house has a stone slab roof and wall to the north and northwest that wraps around the building to give protection and privacy from neighbors. Living spaces and a bedroom occupy the top floor with the remaining bedrooms and guestrooms on the lower level.
