The Horizontal House in Thessaloniki, Greece

June 05, 2010 Category: House, Residential

Located in Thessaloniki, Greece, The Horizontal House was designed by sparch SAKELLARIDOU / PAPANIKOLAOU ARCHITECTS. The design is for a single family house for a young couple, at Thermi, a quiet suburb at the outskirts of Thessaloniki, Greece and is framed on the horizon by the mountain at the east and the distant views of Thermaikos Bay to the South.

The brief set by the clients was that the house had to have close contact to the ground and the ground, as a place, as landscape and nature, formed the main theme. The house had to be on the ground, in immediate relationship to the horizontal landscape.

The house extends on the ground in an L shape, surrounding the pool and the main deck. The horizontal line becomes the surface that wraps around the programme, defining the volume and its contact to the ground.
