The Cube in Edinburgh, United Kingdom

June 29, 2010 Category: Cultural, Public Buildings

The Cube that located in Edinburgh, United Kingdom, Designed by Allan Murray Architects the new 66,000 sq ft development on Leith Street presents an array of glazed ‘picture’ windows set onto a natural stone frame, articulated by a field of internal timber screens.

The city centre development is designed to present a contemporary image in its relationship with the existing urban context. A five storey entrance atrium to the six storey building is occupied by dramatically suspended ‘cube-like’ meeting rooms providing a key focal element, whilst the top floor is reminiscent of attic floors in the adjacent tenements.

The city centre development offers views out to Calton Hill from the back offices and landscaped roof terraces created by the reduced massing to the upper levels. The roof terraces join design elements such as timber louvres to the front of the building to achieve a BREEAM Excellent rating – the UK’s sustainability measurement – for the building.
