The St Marylebone School by Gumuchdjian Architects is located in London, United Kingdom. St Marylebone School is located inside the conservation area of Marylebone, close to Grade 1 and Grade 2 listed buildings.

The public school downtown small “offers for 900 girls and less than 5% of outdoor space required, no gym dedicated, no mess and zero accessibility for the disabled.

Expansion by acquisition of adjacent sites has been limited due to the location of the school in the heart of the most expensive real estate in the United Kingdom.

The proposal was therefore to find the PE / Drama facility below the existing playground and build a block of new classrooms.

The underground facility opens on a lower court which gives the day and fresh air and dispels the negative perceptions of typical development below ground.

Both buildings were designed as low energy buildings using traditional systems of the environment.

Although primarily to provide additional facilities, the project re-orients the campus and for the first time, provides disabled access.
