Snowden House by Crawford Partnership, United Kingdom

August 29, 2009 Category: House, Residential

The Snowden House was designed by Crawford Partnership is located on a tight corner plot at the end of a 4 storey Victorian terrace within a Conservation Area. The development was required to be no more obtrusive and visible from street level than the original 3 metre boundary wall. After an extended period of negotiations with the Kensington and Chelsea planners it was agreed that a contemporary design for the house would be an acceptable approach.

The home design philosophy is to invert the normal configuration of a house with all three bedrooms located within a new excavated basement occupying the entire site and with living, kitchen and dining space in an open plan ground floor pavilion. Light wells in the front and rear gardens allow daylight and sunlight to flood down into each bedroom through full height sliding glass doors. The garden spaces have been designed to provide a Zen like oasis of calm and these sunny, light filled rooms belie their subterranean location.
