The Robert and Arlene Kogod Courtyard, a signature element of an historic building that houses two Smithsonian Museums, the National Portrait Gallery and the American Art Museum, opened to the public on 18 November. The elegant glass canopy, designed by Foster and Partners, provides an innovative enclosure for 28,000 square feet of space located at the center of the historic Patent Office Building, considered to be one of the finest surviving examples of Greek Revival architecture in the United States. Foster worked closely with the Museum to design an addition that was both sensitive to the historic structure yet added a modern element. The roof is a wavy glass and steel structure that appears to float over the courtyard.
