Russian Architectural Union building in Moscow, Russia

Located in Moscow, Russia, Russian Architectural Union building was designed by A.Asadov architectural studio. The idea of this project arose in 2002. The Union of Architects of Russia called a competition for the reconstruction and expansion of the office building which was subsequently won by A.Asadov architectural studio and is now complete.

The new building brings the Union’s home up-to-date reflecting the latest achievements in the field of architectural thought and the construction industry. While the two elements of the building, historical and modern, interact with one another aesthetically in colour and playful form, it was decided from the beginning of the design process to keep the two parts of a complex independent from each other. Sharing only the common evacuation stair, the design isolates the two volumes. The new addition provides office space which in turn regenerates income for the Union and replenishes funds used for the redesign.

Reconstruction in this instance involved removing a proportion of the original building to allow the new structural roof and offices to slip into place. From the ground level up the painted copper ‘green wave’ over the original structure forms a wide peak-canopy. A copper inscription of “The Union of Architects of Russia” decorates the bottom plane, branding the building and allowing instant recognition.
