Rural Retreat in Sagaponack, New York, United States

June 16, 2010 Category: House, Residential

Rural Retreat that located in Sagaponack, New York, United States, was designed by TsAO & McKOWN Architects. New York based Tsao-Mckown were required to design the Rural Retreat house for an undetermined client. Due to this, the house aspires to be as accommodating as possible for various types of clients from couples to families.

Tsao-Mckown chose to explore what they believed to be a human ambivalence between the desires for social conformity and complete freedom. The house is ‘sculpted’ into its flat terrain offering high levels of seclusion whilst being open and inviting to its surroundings.

Issues of sustainability were addressed throughout, by placing nearly half of the house below grade; geothermal contributions are significant whilst natural chimney effects spread cool air to upper levels. The External cladding and floors are of sustainable woods, cedar and bamboo, respectively.
