Located in Melbourne, Australia, the art-house rooftop bar and Cinema designed and completed by Grant Amon Architects Pty Ltd. The edge of Melbourne’s dense but low scale china-town is a spectacular location for the art-house Rooftop Cinema, perhaps the first of its type in Australia. Encompassing a Cinema foyer and office tenancy on the sixth floor, new access stair, bar, amenities and open air cinema on the rooftop, the renovation covers some 550 sq.m. A black plywood clad pod serves as the ticket booth, trimmed internally with lilac velvet and externally with black cyclone mesh. Access to the cinema above is facilitated by a new open steel tread and cyclone mesh clad stair, hung in the existing light court. Upstairs, the bar, amenities and pergola are clad with recycled timber.

Concealed LED lighting and backlit fiberglass enhance their forms, which have black rubber roofs and retractable canvas awnings to protect from the elements. The cinema area, enclosed with a perimeter cyclone fence, unveils striped deck chairs set on synthetic ‘smartgrass’, directed towards the floating cinema screen. To the rear, the black clad bio box digitally projects the night’s film through a slot window. Additional seating is provided on the surrounding deck with storage underneath. A true visual and cultural dimension has been added to the cityscape.
