Located in North Lanarkshire, United Kingdom, Ravenscraig Sports Facility, designed by Populous, The development of the old site is one of the largest regeneration projects in Europe and the architectural design of the buildings’ structure create a link to the steel industry that has had such a strong cultural presence on this site and within the local community. The design is based on an undulating form with integrated north-facing roof lights and glazed end walls.
The facility boasts an indoor full-sized football pitch with spectator seating, a full-sized outdoor 3G surface and six outdoor floodlit five-a-side pitches. Athletics facilities are a major part of the complex with a six lane 135m running track, throw and jump areas and a strength-and-conditioning area for athletes to use.
Also on offer is a multi-sports hall, set in N-S orientation with nine badminton courts, a huge fitness gym with top range equipment, dance studios, a sports injury clinic and office facilities.
This new sports facility is preparing to host the International Children’s Games in 2011 and will be a key training venue for the 2012 Olympic and 2014 Commonwealth Games.
