Queen of the Dart in Exeter, United Kingdom

Located in Exeter, United Kingdom, Designed by Enspace Architects, Queen of the Dart is the name of an ancient copper mine located on Dart Moor in Devon. By the turn of the 20th century the site was occupied by a timber frame asbestos cottage. In 2004 after years discussing how to cope with the aging cottage it was decided that a new house should be built.

The special nature of the site and importance of the house to the family meant that only a carefully resolved design would be suitable. The house was designed to reflect its Devon roots taking a lead from the Devon long house.

There are three parts to the scheme. Each building provides an architectural solution for the clients’ requirements. The main house is a modern timber frame building with high ceilings, an imposing entrance hall and long sections of glazing. The utility is an oak frame with cut slate walls. Finally the barn is the oldest remaining building on the site. Its crumbling field stone walls were repaired using traditional techniques and the king post trussed slate roof reinstated.
