PSBB LLA School Bangalore designed by klimArt Pvt Ltd is located in India. With the Bangalore climate in mind, Indian architects klimArt Pvt. Ltd. designed the new PSBB LLA School to keep the solar path, wind directions and slope of the ground in mind. The architects also incorporated Indian values in the design – global vision and a holistic approach to the campus that minimizes its dependence on the energy grid.
The design concept called for an educational campus to serve children from primary to high school that create interesting, energy efficient spaces while separating building masses yet interlinked them for circulation efficiency.
The energy efficient and low-cost school ensures minimal surface run-off with 100 percent of rainwater recharging. Various solar passive methods have been used to ensure comfort in the classrooms without resorting to active energy means. All the classrooms are smart-class enabled and can run interactive media from remote server.
Students prone to daydreaming won’t like this feature, but the teachers will: the windows are designed so classrooms overlooking the playgrounds have openings above the line of sight, minimizing distraction. All classrooms have left-facing windows from to avoid creating shadows on the writing plane. Windows touching slab bottoms increase glare-free reflected diffused light deep inside classrooms. Light also reflects off the ceiling, owing to the lintel location at slab level, thereby bouncing diffused light deep into the rooms and reducing the need for supplementary artificial lighting.
Overall the design, seeks to foster a love of learning and make school less a chore than a fun experience. The spaces play with geometry, with planes arresting continuous spaces into scaled areas that children can relate and enjoy. Spatial planning crafts nooks and corners with unique spaces, leading the mind to explore. The design eliminated long monotonous straight-line, regimental corridors, which are so common to school designs.
The Amphitheatre is the focus for all outdoor activities and doubles as for cultural activities and school programmes.
There are no stark, long, scary corridors for the younger students. The nursery and primary blocks have nonlinear corridors with holes and railing to create a happy visual sequence. The classes are colour-coded, the corridors well balanced and naturally lit, central atrium ready for play at any time, irrespective of the weather.
The middle and high school blocks are designed on a courtyard concept that contains and segregates different age groups into more manageable divisions.
All the blocks are sited mostly at the ground floor to ease circulation but to avoid monotony. The scale of the building is at the child’s level so as not to prove intimidating or scary.
