Pendorya shopping centre in Istanbul, Turkey

June 14, 2010 Category: Cultural, Public Buildings

Designed by Erginoglu & Calislar Architects, Pendorya shopping centre is located in Istanbul, Turkey. Located on a busy E-5 highway, the Pendorya shopping centre has been constructed in a growing development zone, which is expected to include office and residential buildings in the near future. Situated so close to a main road, the essential criteria for this project’s design and form were derived from the structure’s busy location. The architectural firm on this 90,000 sq m project are Erginoglu and Calislar.

In an attempt to turn its back on the adjoining main road, Pendorya’s dynamic inner spaces are exposed to a sheltered open square, which is anticipated to be the main entry for pedestrian access. This additional inner space provides a level of flexibility, achieved by variations in the plan of the retail areas and easy pedestrian flow through a specifically designed circulation system.

The continuous intensity of the neighbouring highway traffic was taken into account in the design of the facade, which has been constructed with a brightly coloured logo-strip to catch the eye. On the ground floor of the building, the facade is covered in glass panels whereas the upper floors are constructed with custom-made, precast, concrete patterned panels in an effort to achieve long term maintenance and visual coherence.
