Niven Road House was designed by Linghao Architects, meandering walk over 5 levels connects a series of rooms of different activities and atmospheres. Located in an innercity neighbourhood dating back to the ealry 20th centurey, a conserved 2 storey terrace shophouse type is now reimagined with a 5 storey rear addition for a young couple, a 2 year old son and a live in caretaker. On a site measuring 3.6mx 14.8 long an dinto a total area of 140m2, a meandering walk connects a serires of different activities and atmospheres, fusing the living patterns of the house with the city.
From the traditional 5 foot way, one enters into a low dim living den. The texture of the streets are continued into this first level. In the middle, a sliver of a courtyard lets in light & air. One could also ennter from the backlane into an open kitchen, in a scene reminiscent of the old backlanes. From here, a stair begins an unfolding vertical labyrinth that takes you through a pitch ceilinged white bedroom, a glassed in bathroom, a timber clad bedroom with views of the old roof, a study in the sky with a cantilevering mesh cage, and lastly, a roof garden in the middle of the city.
