Located in Miami Beach, FL, United States, Montclair Lofts was designed by Oppenheim Architecture + Design LLP. The 65,000 sq ft Montclair condominium complex’s surrounding Miami Beach area is defined by a well established fabric of 1950’s modern residential buildings, rational and rectilinear in design, with prominent balconies as their major scalar feature. In contrast, the historic Montclair building has a compact abstracted massing without major projecting elements and, at two stories, is decidedly demure in contrast to adjacent buildings.
The patterned aluminum screens provide an ephemeral light filter; a versatile element which adjusts to the surrounding forms. Mediating between the new and the historic is an interstitial space which serves as private yard while fulfilling circulation requirements. The luminous and well defined space creates open-air corridors of ample width, setting the perfect stage for easy communal interaction.
The units are open plan and enjoy dual exterior exposures-allowing for excess light and air; they are spacious and flexible allowing each owner to tailor the space to their particular needs. Parking is inconspicuously accommodated along the ground floor perimeter.
