Mary Fitzgerald Square Pavilion  that located in Johannesburg, South Africa, was designed by Alchemy Architects, Alchemy Architects’ proposal for a stage like pavilion to the east of Mary Fitzgerald Square located within Newtown’s cultural precinct of Johannesburg, South Africa is envisaged as a permanent landmark and extension to the current Museum Africa, Market Theatre and the many jazz clubs in the area.

FIFA’s Local Organising Committee required a facility to promote the upcoming 2010 World Cup to be hosted in South Africa over June and July. This new stage would become a feature of the area and be utilised for the many musical and sporting events held throughout the year hosted at the Mary Fitzgerald Square.

Metaphorically conceived as ‘Africa at play’, the design aims to translate the sweeping movement of a football player with the harmonic linear proportions of a musical frequency wave. The structures elegance and dynamism is generated through a process defined by a non-linear set of rules that contradicts the rigidity of the inner city block grid system surrounding it.

Both visitors and performers are able to explore and interact with the pavilion by circulating, walking through, over and onto it.
