The jutting facade of the recently completed Lace apartment block is constructed by the order of form following function. In Nova Gorica, where these apartments stand, temperatures are the hottest in Slovenia during the summer but ferocious winds endure throughout the winter. The facade’s many shapes – projecting roofs, pergolas, apartment dividing walls, terraces and balconies with loggias – therefore, protect external spaces and offer privacy to inhabitants whilst encouraging interaction with the outside world. This protection also provides sustainable benefits sheltering the inside from the extreme temperatures and reducing energy costs.
