Designed by BVN Architecture, Brisbane Inner Northern Busway in Australia significantly reduces bus traffic. The underlying principles for this very prominent public project were to provide a highly legible and efficient transport interchange within the centre of the city, recognising its civic location whilst satisfying stringent Government value for money criteria. The complexity of the project determined the adoption of a project alliance framework as the only feasible contractual method to satisfactorily deliver the project. The public benefits from the project include the provision of a high quality public transport facility in the CBD; the catalyst for the redevelopmentof King George Square, the renewal of a large tract of under maintained public space to the west of City Hall and the provision of a major CBD Cycle Centre. The project also strongly engaged with the Brisbane City Councils Competition for the renewal of King George Square which was undertaken by Urbis / Architectus.
The project is unusual in that the majority of built form is underground. Concepts for the above ground built forms were dictated by busway alignments and access; existing structures built within, site boundaries and landforms. Relationships were developed with the structures proposed as part of the KGS Redevelopment which featured on folded inclined planes and axially generated angular shapes. The project has been judged by the client bodies to have exceeded the brief in terms of function including the legibility of circulation, the provision of more bus platforms than briefed; materials and finishes of higher quality than anticipated and delivery of the project under budget and within program. The delivery of the project under a Project Alliance provided exceptional learnings to all disciplines. The Alliance invested time in building a cohesive team of numerous and potentially incongruent disciplines which then performed at high levels as a team to deliver quality outcomes in what may well have been viewed by Government as a civil engineering project.
The project met a number of sustainability goals including the redevelopment of several CBD brownfield sites, the reuse of existing infrastructure, the capture of rainwater for landscape and building uses, the provision of a link in the CBD recycled water ring main project, carbon neutrality through tree planting, a major contribution to public transport and a major CBD Cycle Centre. The project provides large community benefit in its realisation of the Governments Public Transport agenda and removes substantial bus traffic from the CBD streets. The project also developed a Community and Stakeholder Management Program that has won national awards for its effectiveness in Community Relations.
