The Hendrie Gateway Pavilion designed by Diamond and Schmitt Architects is located in Hamilton/Burlington, Ontario, Canada. The gateway facility is both the literal and conceptual gateway to the botanical garden of the 21st century. Hendrie Gateway Pavilion provides a year-round, barrier free, connecting link between the Royal Botanical Gardens Centre and the Hendrie Park Gardens. The gateway facility spans over a slope in the landscape providing a transition to an existing tunnel and gardens and housing Hendrie Hall, a multipurpose space that can be used for social functions and as a public gathering space for large groups visiting the gardens.
The highly transparent glazed walls fill the space with light creating a dramatic impact both during the day and night. The glazed roof is designed to appear light and transparent and is supported on a closely spaced framework of structural members. Hendrie Hall is bounded on the north side by a permanent vertical Living Wall.
