Fourways Hospital in Johannesburg, South Africa

January 03, 2011 Category: Commercial Building, Hospital

Designed by A3 Architects, Fourways Hospital is located in Johannesburg, South Africa, Viewed as unfeasible for a main facility, it was decided to convert the existing area into consulting rooms than build a more appropriate hospital building in the subsequent phase.

Arriving at the entrance, patients and employees will see plaster and paint finishing on the external façades of the building. Internally, this theme continues on the walls and the hospital floors are a combination of porcelain tiles, carpet and Tarkett vinyl sheeting, a novel innovative yet, low maintenance vinyl flooring.

Further design considerations focused on limiting the claustrophobic and institutional feel associated with hospitals, which is considered a cause of patient anxiety. Softening the experience of being in a hospital, the building and interiors were given a fresh, bright and simple aesthetic. All wards have access into the courtyard, garden areas and onto balconies. This external access promotes wellness through contact with fresh air and natural light.
