El Camino Hospital that located in Mountain View, United States, was designed by KMD Architects. A Central Plant Expansion adding 6,000 sq ft to an existing 10,000 sq ft involved installation of new equipment and replacement of existing equipment all while supporting an operating facility. A general reconfiguration of the campus as a whole was also accomplished, separating the various functional entries to the site. A major design opportunity which emerged by retaining a portion of the existing facility to accommodate Outpatient Services was the establishment of an open courtyard between the new and existing buildings.
The siting and disposition of the L-configured plan created a public space within El Camino Hospital that has become the symbolic and physical center of the El Camino Campus. The courtyard and interior concourse represent the place-making opportunity that makes the experience recognisable and memorable.
