East Sixth Street House in Boston, United Kingdom

May 28, 2011 Category: House, Residential

The East Sixth Street House designed by Touloukian Touloukian Inc is located in Boston, United Kingdom. A speculative residential unit is designed at the rear of an urban lot where the building code prevents windows on two of the four facades and restricted views limit visibility to the street and to desirable adjacent properties. In order to provide a dramatic response to the marketplace, the design includes a three story sky-light shaft at the “dark” corner of the addition to bring light uniquely and deep into the kitchen, study and master bathroom.

A dramatic, sun-filled stair “sky-light hall” with minimal windows on the exterior wall redirects the focus away from views to the adjacent rear lots, and towards a modern sun-filled and spacious environment. The neighborhood context of boxlike structures with varied siding patterns is re-interpreted through simple geometric volumes and the siding pattern of fiber-cement clapboard in various standard widths.
