Coornhertkade in Alkmaar, Netherlands

Designed by FARO Architecten, Coornhertkade is located in Alkmaar, Netherlands. The restructuring of an old working class area of Oud Overdie resulted in a distinct building that enhances the residential flow within the neighbourhood. A cooperative planning process resulted in full support of existing residents for the architectural plans. These residents wanted FARO to make the first distinct building in the neighbourhood including 60 residences and 60 parking spaces.

All apartments are flooded with light thanks to high ceilings and all have automatic sun screens whilst most apartments have a large balcony that can be accessed from both the living room and the bed room. The façade cascades down and has ‘hidden’ roof terraces on all levels. Residents always have a view of the street level and can stay in touch with the old neighbourhood. The project yields a large variety of apartment types; there is a good mix of large and small apartments, many with interesting details and flexible floor plans which results in the apartments fitting like a puzzle into the building.

The building has owner occupied apartments, rental and social rental apartments which makes 50% of the housing affordable for current residents of the neighbourhood.
