This dynamic architecture was created Archial Group plc is SMC Jenkins & Marr’s Clydebank College that located in Clydebank, Scotland, United Kingdom. SMC Jenkins & Marr’s the £33M Clydebank College Campus is the major catalyst in a bold the urban regeneration project, on the site of the former John Brown Shipyard, in Clydebank. The project is the largest single site Further Education campus relocation project in Scotland. The campus building is nearing completion and will open when the QE2 returns to the Clyde to celebrate its 40th anniversary later this summer. SMC Jenkins & Marr was closely involved in the development of the site’s master-plan. The former shipyard site had effectively cut off the town from the riverside. With the creation of the streets (routes) and public uses (squares, community facilities) people will now be drawn down into the site and facilities along the river edge. This will ensure that they stay on the riverside, engaging with the College facilities there.

The College building has two entrances; one facing the town and one facing the confluence of the Rivers Cart and Clyde. Both of these entrances have large overhanging cantilevered canopies, which appear to ‘float’ over you as you enter the building. These create a strong visual landmark for the College. Their form alludes to the scale and visual presence of the great hulking shapes of the ships that would dominate the townscape as they were being built. Working intensely with the College, SMC Jenkins & Marr was able to rationalise the College’s accommodation requirements into the bespoke facility. Lengthy design workshops with the College staff ensured the campus building has precisely tailored accommodation for delivery of its curriculum, now and in the future. The College has several innovative forms of teaching spaces, such as the Training Restaurant and Hair and Beauty Salon, each of which fronts onto one of the public squares and is open to the general public. These will allow students to learn in “real” work environments as part of their courses.
