Clackmannanshire Community Healthcare Centre in Alloa, United Kingdom

August 18, 2010 Category: Health, Public Buildings

Designed by HLM Architects, Clackmannanshire Community Healthcare Centre is located in Alloa, United Kingdom, After an 18 month construction period, the new HLM Architects-designed Clackmannanshire Community Healthcare Centre has been completed and handed-over to clients, NHS Forth Valley. The £20million private finance initiative facility will be officially opened by Member of the Scottish Parliament, Keith Brown, Minister for schools skills, and Ian M Mullen, Chairman of Forth Valley NHS, on Wednesday 25 November.

HLM worked in partnership with NHS Forth Valley and Stirling based development and services group, Robertson on the project which is located in Alloa, Scotland, providing healthcare for a population of more than 49,000. The low profile of the building and careful use of wooden cladding in its design create an appropriate and welcoming space for the rural location.

The new facilities include 45 inpatient beds for physically and mentally frail older people, including provision for intermediate care and rehabilitation, palliative care and continuing care for those with complex needs. Other facilities include day services for elderly people and those with mental health problems, a base for teams working in community mental health, social workers and other community services.

Built on the adjacent sites of the former Sauchie Hospital and Glen Alva Mill in the primarily residential Sauchie district of Alloa, the development has been designed in ‘campus style’. A cluster of buildings includes the healthcare centre building which houses community patient and out-of-hours services, as well as providing offices and staff facilities. The healthcare centre also acts as a gateway to a central atrium space where access is provided to the other buildings. These include the Community Mental Health Resource Centre; The Inpatient/ Day Hospital with its psychiatric and palliative care bedrooms and bedrooms for the frail and elderly; and a facilities management building which contains stores, a workshop, office and patient laundry. A covered walkway connects all of the buildings, each of which has a glazed entrance canopy.
