City Market Affordable Housing in Edmonton, Canada

June 04, 2010 Category: Housing, Residential

Designed by Dub Architects Ltd, City Market Affordable Housing is located in Edmonton, Canada .  Built on a former famers market, this project consists of 72 units of affordable housing built above an existing 1960’s exposed concrete structure intended for retail uses. A variety of studio, one-bedroom, two-bedroom and loft units are included and rent rates for the housing will be between 10% and 20% lower than market rate. The project includes 15 units designed for wheelchair accessibility.

The project objectives were to provide high quality; affordable housing that does not stigmatise the transitional neighbourhood by appearing like sub-standard housing, to preserve the unique 1960’s concrete structure and the mature existing trees, to create an active streetscape with commercial uses along the run-down fronting street and to create an interesting street-front by varying the building roofline, expressing the steel structure and providing a few highly visible interiors at the corners for artist’s live/work studios.

The new structure is steel frame with reinforced concrete floors poured into exposed metal pans. To promote sustainable design, minimal exterior walls are utilised, generous natural lighting, an efficient fan coil system and fluorescent lighting and individual electric metering are included for each unit.
