Located in Pittsburgh, United States, Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh Designed by Astorino, the new $625 million campus includes a nine-storey, 296-bed hospital; the 10-storey, 300,00 sq ft John G. Rangos Sr. Research Center; Faculty Pavilion; Administrative Office Building; Plaza Building; Lawrenceville Medical Building; Central Plant; and three parking garages on a 10-acre site. The campus — with 1.5 million square feet of usable space — replaces a smaller, outdated campus in Oakland. The new hospital is 25 percent larger than the Oakland hospital, and the new research center is 50 percent larger than its former location.
Astorino’s sister company, fathom, conducted extensive primary qualitative research to ensure that the facility meets the needs of all of its users, one example of which was a colour and collage experience with a nine year old girl which helped to determine the colours used in the design.
The new facility is one of the first pediatric hospitals in the nation built from the ground up to support an electronic health record which helps to ensure a slimmer margin of error for medication.
