The Butcher Works located in Sheffield, United Kingdom, designed by Race Cottam architects are celebrating after its conversion of a famous city landmark was shortlisted for a major design award.

Butcher Works, in Sheffield, England, has been recognised in the Best Building category at the Sheffield Design Awards, organised by the Sheffield Civic Trust in collaboration with RIBA Yorkshire.

The building, an old factory built in 1835 and once at the centre of the city’s cutlery industry, was given its bold new image by Race Cottam in 2007. With many of the original features retained in the new development, the project has refurbished the derelict, Grade 2* Butcher Works buildings into a unique mixed-use scheme of residential, commercial and educational use.

Because of its evocative Victorian nature, the red-brick buildings, set around a courtyard and standing in the shadow of the original chimney, have been used as a backdrop for UK television dramas such as Micawber and Silent Witness.

Developers JF Finnegan, working to Race Cottam’s innovative plans, were responsible for the quality £7.5 million conversion and refurbishment of Butcher Works.

The Best Building category celebrates the most successful design for a new building in the city, or excellence in the restoration, alteration, extension or improvement of a historic or existing building. The awards will take place in February 2009.
