Boksto, Detailed planning approval in Vilnius, Lithuania

October 29, 2010 Category: Cultural, Public Buildings

Boksto, Detailed planning approval, was designed by Studio Seilern Architects, that located in Vilnius, Lithuania. Boksto is a 13,265 sq m mixed use development including a performing arts space, jazz bar/restaurant, spa, residential and office accommodation, and an underground car park for 115 cars.

The concept combines restoring the Baroque and Gothic buildings (some dating from the 15th century) to the original fabric (by removing later additions), whilst acknowledging that the scars and the aging of the buildings are a natural asset that should also be preserved, rather than masqueraded.

Three key ideas were applied to the project: the existing Baroque and Gothic fabric is the most valuable asset of the complex and should be reinstated to its original form; the complex, being at the fringe of the old town, has not benefitted from the regeneration and the vibrancy at the core of the old town and the inner courtyard should therefore be conceived as a public space, with a cultural element at the core of the site; and all new building insertions, while uncompromisingly contemporary, are a direct response to the context.
