Located in London, United Kingdom, Bethnal Green Health Centre was designed by Theis and Khan Architects were commissioned, to extend and refurbish the 1980’s Bethnal Green Health Centre by Tower Hamlets PCT. The existing building had been designed for two separate GP practices and community health services. The new centre now accommodates one GP practice at ground level and the community health services at first floor.

Two new office extensions at first floor provide a hub for the district nurse and health care professionals. The central entrance, overlooking the green, was opened up to create a double height space with waiting areas at both levels linked by a central staircase; providing a calm, uplifting place to wait for treatment. The treatment rooms are located along two ‘spines’ either side of the central space with service stairs, WCs and storage in the central core. Sustainability and environmental comfort for the users were of paramount importance and needed to be incorporated within the limited budget.
