Designed by Nigel Anthony Reading with Aedas and Arup, Asynsis Architecture + Design, horizontal observation wheel is located in Hong Kong, China. It is intended as an icon of sustainability because of its use of renewable wind, tidal and solar energy, and to be carbon neutral by virtue of carbon-offsetting the construction footprint through tree planting in arid, drought-stricken areas in China. Hong Kong is likely to be a global centre for carbon trading, hence the tower combining the Chinese character ‘Zhong’ and the Greek letter ‘Phi’ represents the ‘fusion cuisine’ success of the ‘one country – two systems’ formula, and so immediately becomes a natural brand for Hong Kong and for sustainability itself. It should have a similar iconic identity as the Eiffel Tower does for Paris and the London Eye for London.
