ASLA Green Roof that located in Washington, DC, United States, was designed by Editorial. Designed by Boston-based landscape architect, Michael Van Valkenburgh and Associates, the 3300 sq ft roof is replete with diverse plantings and surface materials. It even has its own topography.

Green roofs are much less common in America than they are in Europe. So, in the hope that it can serve as vehicle for change and make green roofs more commonplace in America, the American Society of Landscape Architects built an inventive green roof on their Washington DC headquarters that will make even European’s envious.

At the entrance to the roof, Van Valkenburgh has created two elevated “waves” formed by rigid insulation and covered with a green roof system. While these forms provide visual interest they also serve the more practical function of hiding the building’s HVAC units. Surrounding the waves is a green roof system with aluminum grating that allows visitors to walk on the roof without damaging it. Chairs and tables are placed to encourage visitors to make the journey up.
