The 27 East Sussex Lane is family house was designed by ONG&ONG Pte Ltd in Singapore. The external façade of 27 East Sussex Lane looks like a resort villa with its grand and imposing entrance. The house is hidden behind plenty of bamboo plants which imparts a sense of privacy and an oriental outlook. Like bamboo, timber is one of the main attractions here. The house is enveloped by dark stained timber fences and the windows are framed by long timber louvers. A stone wall façade makes up one section of the house giving the façade a texturised, duality.
From the outside, the house has a strong horizontal form, but it is actually not quite so internally. It is a two-storey house with a basement. The master bedroom on the second level protrudes out into the backyard. Looking up from the swimming pool located at the back of the courtyard, the underside of the cantilever is decorated with timber strips which elevate the ‘outdoorsy’ resort feel.
The spaces between outdoor and indoor are inter-connected so that a true resort home feel can be experienced. The living room connects to the swimming pool via a verandah which is constructed using the same stone as the façade. This ensures a consistent design language throughout. With the low-pitched roof and the different tactile materials selected, the house is a delightful place to relax in.
